Enjoy a fun evening of making blackout poetry and meeting new people. If you’re new to the medium, blackout poetry is the art of removing words from an existing text to create an original work. Participants will learn techniques for finding and combining meaningful phrases, create one to three poems, and decorate their new work with craft supplies. There will be plenty of chatter and laughter throughout the evening as participants share their new creations, which are sometimes profound or profoundly silly.
We’ll provide pages for you to black out, as well as craft supplies (markers, stickers, tape, flowers, colored paper, and trinkets). To personalize the experience, you’re strongly encouraged to bring your own book, magazine, or other printed material.
All ages and skill levels are welcome.

This class is sliding scale, so please choose the amount that makes the most sense for you. The options are set up in $5 increments, but if you want to pay amounts in between, you can add a tip at checkout.

Shanika Powell (she/her) is a Brooklyn-based poet and writer who loves making new friends. When she’s not at her day job crafting North America’s finest emails, you’ll find her whittling away at her novel and finding snatches of time to nourish her creative life. She discovered blackout poetry while reading Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon. It helped her climb out of a creative rut, and she’s practiced the craft ever since.
